Crete Island

Crete (or Kriti in Greek) is the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean. It is the land of Ikarus and Daidalos and housed the first European civilisation, the Minoan civilization. It is the island where Zeus was born and where he fell in love with Europa. It is the birthplace of King Minos, Dominicos Theotokopoulos (El Greco), Nikos Kazatzakis, Vicenzos Cornaros, Eleftherios Venizelos, Odysseas Elytis and many other famous persons.
Crete is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece. Crete's highlights are its endless & sandy beaches, quiet fishing villages, delightful towns, medieval harbor towns, Venetian castles and fortresses, majestic mountains, traditional Cretan villages, archeological sites (Knossos, Phaestos, Gortys and many other places), amazing gorges, scented citrus and olive groves, watered plains and valleys, palm tree forests... The excellent climate of the island, the sun and the sea, the beautiful landscape, the tourist resorts, its rich history & traditions, make it one of the hottest spots in the Mediterranean.
